Situation:
A firm specializing in Internet Telephony (VoIP: Voice over Internet Protocol) had purchased and implemented an “off the shelf” billing software package to handle day to day customer account management and billing. The new system was designed to service “pre-paid” calling card type accounts. The firm’s business model called for both “pre” and “real” time paid account billing. Customer account balances would have a starting balance to accommodate initial account activity. The balance would be decremented according to the amounts of minutes used and the corresponding calling rates for those minutes. Once the account balance would reach a pre-determined minimum balance, the account would have to be replenished by billing the customer’s credit card on file.

Problem:
The real-time billing component was indispensable to the VoIP firm and was required to be online before the service could go live. The firm’s billing package was not designed to real time replenishment of the customer’s account. Efforts to add this functionality to the existing system had degraded performance to unacceptable levels. The package was designed and built by an over-seas firm making the time difference and “off the shelf” nature of the product major hurdles in the development and implementation of the required “post-billing” component.

Solution:
Next Technology Consulting, Inc. Special Forces Consultants designed and implemented a highly scalable, automated, “real-time” credit card billing application that interfaced seamlessly with the clients existing billing package and reporting system. The application was designed and implemented in 6 days. The billing solution was designed in a way that it could easily handle 100 times the existing billing load with no additional hardware, modifications to the application or the billing package.

Result:
By implementing the automated credit card billing solution, the VoIP firm was able to provide uninterrupted internet phone service to thousands of customers. Without real time account replenishment, the client would have had considerable financial exposure. As a result, the client had the ability to cut off service to accounts that did not have sufficient funds in real time.
